Position

Step 4 of the review: what the evidence allows this repository to claim, and what it would add. Each "not found" is a statement about these searches, not about the world. Terms are in frame.

Shape: position

Known

  • A process from problem to evaluated result exists in research: six activities, a nominal order, any entry point (Peffers 2006).
  • Practice has its own frameworks for the same span: CRISP-DM, Scrum, Shape Up (Chapman 2000; Schwaber 2020; Singer 2019).
  • Avoidable rework is large by expert report, and hasty specification is a named source (Boehm 2001).
  • Practice guides for a project's folder and log agree (Noble 2009; Wilson 2017; Sandve 2013).
  • A call for a review before new work exists in medicine (Lund 2016), with the neglect measured (Glasziou 2014, secondary).

Not found

  • A study that isolates a written scope, a named baseline or a list of the person's decisions and measures rework or round trips.
  • A study that a set of files lets a second person resume.
  • A study of a plan written as a structured text, beyond outlines for writing.
  • A review of design science process models, and a review of what a project trail holds.
  • A literature-review step in the DSR process of Peffers 2006. Hevner 2004 was not opened, so this holds for that paper only.

Nobody has done this, or not found here

Claim Status
no measured gain from scope or baseline first not found in 14 strings and 4 visits; sixteen works are located only, so a gain may sit in one of them
the trail has no study not found; the resumption papers were read at abstract level or located

What the repository can claim

  • Under convention, untested: scope and objectives first, a named baseline as the exit of a review, a four-file trail.
  • Under supported with caveat: hasty specification is a major source of avoidable rework (Boehm 2001).
  • It cannot claim a measured cut in round trips.
  • It cannot claim a fixed cost ratio for late defects.

What this repository adds

  • The five steps joined: frame, review, state of the art, position, baseline, each a topic, finished by a test the field's models leave implicit.
  • A baseline step that the DSR process places inside objectives and evaluation.
  • A defined trail, with a boundary to the document genres.
  • A way to test it: baseline sets out a comparison, not run.

Where practice runs ahead of the evidence

  • Scrum and CRISP-DM prescribe goals and success criteria before work; the text read cites no measurement. Shape Up is below the threshold and is not counted here.
  • The trail guides prescribe files; no study tests them.

Where evidence is ignored by practice

  • The delayed-issue figure of 100 times is repeated in practice while a 171-project analysis found no such effect (Menzies 2017, secondary).
