# Figure: how a figure is drawn

A figure or a diagram in any document of the family: how it is made, reached, laid out, labelled and judged. The evidence is the [figures topic](../../evidence/figures/README.md).

Principle

[Text alternative](text-alternative.md)
[Few crossings](few-crossings.md)
[Label in place](label-in-place.md)
[Group by region](group-by-region.md)

Three rules of a figure are reader-ergonomics' own, linked and not repeated here. A relation is drawn ([draw relations](https://github.com/Tewf/reader-ergonomics/blob/v1.18.2/principles/page/draw-relations.md)). Its words sit beside it ([figure next to its text](https://github.com/Tewf/reader-ergonomics/blob/v1.18.2/principles/page/figure-next-to-its-text.md)). Its lines reach 3:1 against the page and their fill ([sufficient contrast](https://github.com/Tewf/reader-ergonomics/blob/v1.18.2/principles/page/sufficient-contrast.md)).
